Mountains Aglow

The Sacred Heart Fires – One of South Tyrol’s Most Impressive Traditions.

There are evenings in South Tyrol that stay with you forever. Sacred Heart Sunday is certainly one of them.

As dusk begins to fall, the first fires appear on the mountain peaks and slopes surrounding the valley. One by one, giant hearts, crosses and Christian symbols light up the mountainsides, glowing brightly against the night sky. It is a breathtaking spectacle that captivates both locals and visitors year after year.

The origins of these fires go back much further than the Sacred Heart tradition itself. Long before today’s fire displays existed, people celebrated the summer solstice by lighting fires on hills and mountain tops. These solstice fires marked the longest day of the year, symbolised light and warmth, and were believed to ward off evil spirits. Even today, when the mountainsides are illuminated by fire, you can still sense something of that ancient fascination: the connection between people, nature and the mountains.

It was only in 1796 that the tradition took on its present meaning. During the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars, the Tyrolean estates entrusted the land to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, asking for protection and guidance. This vow became a symbol of unity, hope and devotion to one’s homeland, while the fires on the mountains became a visible expression of that promise.

The famous Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer later renewed this vow before the Battles of Bergisel. From that moment on, Sacred Heart Sunday became an integral part of Tyrolean identity.

To this day, the tradition is passed down from generation to generation, and the Sacred Heart Fires are prepared with great dedication. Volunteers, members of alpine associations and local farmers carry wood, torches and fuel high into the mountains and, after dark, create impressive fire displays in the shape of hearts, crosses and Christian symbols.

When hundreds of fires finally illuminate the night sky above the Vinschgau Valley, a truly unique atmosphere emerges. For many, it is one of the most beautiful evenings of the year; for visitors, an unforgettable experience that lingers long after the last flames have faded.
