Time for yourself.
When the days slowly start to grow shorter again and the evenings cooler, when nature dons warm, earthy colors and the first leaves fall to the ground, it’s time to pause and listen. The trees let go of what they no longer need; prudent animals make their preparations for the coming season; nature withdraws and gathers its strength. All signs point to retreat.
And perhaps we, too, can draw inspiration from this. The fall months, in particular, invite us to take a step back, slow down, and reconnect with ourselves. Right now is the ideal time for a retreat.
The English word “retreat” comes from the Latin verb *retrahere*, which means “to withdraw.” In modern usage, a retreat usually describes a conscious withdrawal from everyday life—often lasting several days—a time-out during which one can gain some distance, find peace, and turn one’s attention inward once again.
What happens during a retreat can vary greatly. Yoga and meditation may be part of the program, as might breathing exercises, walks in nature, mindful movement, relaxation, or time for silence. For many, shared meals, inspiring conversations, and connecting with others are also part of a retreat. It’s not about doing as much as possible. On the contrary: a retreat creates space to simply not have to do anything for a change.
The distance from everyday obligations that this creates opens up new perspectives. Silence clears the mind and offers a sense of inner spaciousness. And from this space, something new can emerge.
Perhaps that is precisely what makes fall such a special time for a retreat. Nature shows us the way: it grows quieter, lets go, and withdraws. We, too, can treat ourselves to this little break before the year enters its final, often particularly hectic phase.
Here at Matill, too, fall this year is an opportunity to pause, let go, and recharge. In various yoga retreats, yoga teachers Christin and Laura will guide you through this special season. Each retreat has its own focus—ranging from grounding and inner alignment to abundance and gratitude, all the way to Samhain rituals and quiet Yin Yoga. What they all have in common is an invitation to step away from everyday life for a few days, slow down, and reconnect with yourself a little more.
